Vol. 469 No. 1

Written Answers. - Foreign Travel.

Ivor Callely

Question:

667 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the projected number of visits which he will undertake between now and the end of December 1996, in the context of Ireland's Presidency of the EU, to EU member destinations, other European destinations, North American destinations, African destinations and other destinations; the total cost of such travel; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16650/96]

I do not intend to undertake any visits abroad in the context of Irelands' Presidency of the EU, between now and the end of December 1996. However, I propose to visit Irish personnel serving with the European Community Monitor Mission to the Former Yugoslavia (ECMM) in early November next, on the basis that Ireland is responsible for the control and management of that mission during our EU Presidency.

There is currently a total of 88 Irish personnel serving with the ECMM of whom 79 are members of the Permanent Defence Force.

It is not possible to provide a costing in advance of the proposed visit.
