669 Mr. M. Ahern asked the Minister for Defence his views on whether there must be a large cash injection into the Naval Service; the plans, if any, he has for such a cash injection in the immediate future; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16738/96]

I am not aware of the statement referred to by the Deputy. Following on from the efficiency audit group review of the Defence Forces, a separate in-depth study of the Naval Service is currently under way. The outcome of this study will help to form the basis of future investment in the service.
