Vol. 469 No. 3

Written Answers. - Retirement Package.

Paul McGrath

Question:

148 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the terms of the early retirement package which was given to the acting chief executive officer of Westmeath vocational education committee who resigned in May 1995; the comparative package available to chief executive officers with equivalent service and teachers with equivalent service; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17417/96]

The acting chief executive officer of County Westmeath vocational education committee retired on 24 May 1995. His pension and lump sum were based upon his existing service of 25 years plus seven added years. Terms equivalent to the Local Government (Early Retirement and Voluntary Redundancy) Superannuation Scheme, 1992, were applied in the case of the retiring chief executive officer. This scheme was designed to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the public service. Any case of a similar nature involving a chief executive officer would require to be considered on its own merits. As the Deputy will be aware arrangements for the early retirement of teachers are under negotiation with the teacher unions within the framework of the Programme for Competitiveness and Work.
