Vol. 469 No. 3

Written Answers. - Absconders from Open Prisons.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

179 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice the crimes for which the 53 persons still at large having absconded from open centres to date in 1996 were serving a sentence; the length of those sentences; the period of time which had to run on the sentence when they absconded from such open centres; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17528/96]

The information requested by the Deputy is set out below. It should be noted that offenders transferred to open centres are entitled to half remission on the balance of their sentence to be served from the date of the transfer. They would of course revert to the standard one-quarter remission if returned to closed custody. The figures for the amount of sentence remaining quoted below are calculated on the basis of half remission. The offenders marked with an asterisk have since been returned to custody.

Further investigation has indicated that of the total of 53 quoted as still at large as of 18 September 1996 having absconded from open centres, nine were in fact persons who had failed to return from temporary release. These are shown at numbers 45 to 53 at the end of the table.
