Vol. 469 No. 3

Written Answers. - BSE Compensation Fund.

Liam Aylward

Question:

211 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry whether he intends to introduce a BSE compensation fund to assist farmers who do not qualify under the current categories. [17343/96]

Compensation for losses incurred by farmers has already been addressed following the compensation package agreed by the Council of Ministers at end of June. The package, which was worth £70 million to Irish producers provides for a top-up of £22.40 in the suckler cow premium and £15.08 in the special beef premium. The special allocation of £13.3 million is being allocated to compensate producers who sold steers or bulls for slaughter or for live export to third countries between 25 March and 9 June and heifers for slaughter between 25 March and 29 June. Payment of this package will commence shortly.

The issue of compensation for heifers sold through marts during the relevant period is under examination.
