Question:

21 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Minister for Finance when work will commence on the drainage of the Owenmore River. [17368/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 20 and 21 together.

The Office of Public Works has commissioned a firm of consultants to investigate the feasibility of carrying out works which might alleviate localised flooding in the Owenmore river catchment, including consideration of the environmental and ecological impacts of any proposed works. Pending receipt of the consultant's report it is not possible to say what works might be recommended or when they might be undertaken.

The report which is expected later this month will be given prompt consideration by the Office of Public Works with a view to arranging for the earliest possible implementation of its recommendations. The question of funding and who will carry out whatever works are to be implemented will be addressed as part of that consideration process.
