Vol. 469 No. 3

Written Answers. - Review of Payment to Registrars.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

29 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Health if he will review the payment of 68 pence payable to local registrars of deaths, marriages and births on the registration of each such act; if he will introduce a regulation or directive whereby a more realistic fee is payable for the onerous responsibility imposed on such registrars; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17202/96]

The administration of the registration system for births, deaths and marriages is primarily a matter for An t-Árd Chláraitheoir (Registrar-General) of Births, Deaths and Marriages and for local registrars who operate under his general direction. The fees currently payable to registrars appointed under the various Registration Acts are set out in S. I. No. 278 of 1987. The whole area of registration law, including the arrangements for the administration of the system on a national basis, is currently under review. The general issue raised by the Deputy is being addressed within the context of that review.
