Vol. 469 No. 3

Written Answers. - Doneraile Court (Cork) Development.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

68 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the plans, if any, he has for Doneraile Court, Doneraile, County Cork. [17181/96]

Doneraile Court and Demesne which is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) of my Department incorporates a classic 18th century country house and landscaped estate with many unique historic features worthy of conservation.

Last year the NPWS commissioned an independent study to propose a strategic plan for Doneraile Park and Demesne. That study has now been completed and the consultants' report has been submitted to me for consideration.

The report addresses the relationship between Doneraile Court and Demesne and Doneraile town and its importance within the region from a tourism point of view. The report also addresses the history of this site and outlines its historic and conservation interest and explores the potential for its future development. The report was completed following comprehensive consultation with official and voluntary groups and other interested individuals. Their suggestions, where appropriate, will be incorporated into the proposed strategic plan.

I am considering a suitable date for the formal public launch of the consultants report which I will announce shortly. Following the launch the public consultation period of the study will commence. This will provide an opportunity for those who may wish to submit their suggestions or observations in relation to the report to do so. Advertisements in this regard will be placed in the appropriate newspapers.

Following the consultation period I intend to set out a stategic plan for this site having considered all of the submissions received.
