Vol. 469 No. 4

Written Answers. - Law on Guardianship.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

20 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has to review the law on guardianship of children; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17295/96]

I have already indicated to the House, in reply to Question No. 289 of 25 September 1996, that a Bill to update aspects of the law in relation to children, including guardianship, custody and access, is in the course of being drafted and that the details of that Bill will be announced in the usual way as soon as possible. The Bill that I am proposing follows on a review of the law in this area and it takes into account representations made by various interest groups. In the course of further work on the Bill I shall be glad to take into account any further representations on the subject matter.

In so far as the law on guardianship operates at present, I have already set out in detail, in reply to Questions Nos. 15, 58, 59, 60 and 61 of 11 June 1996, my views on the matter.
