Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 8 Oct 1996

Vol. 469 No. 5

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Geoghegan-Quinn. I now call on Deputy Geoghegan-Quinn to state the matter of which she has given notice.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following urgent and important matter; the manner in which Dáil Éireann has not been fully informed by the Minister for Health and the Minister of State at the Department of Health, Deputy O'Shea, in relation to the hepatitis C scandal on the following dates: 28 March by Minister of State O'Shea in a debate on the Adjournment; on 1 May by the Minister for Health at Question Time; on 11 June by the Minister for Health in a Private Members' debate and on 12 June by Minister of State O'Shea in a Private Members' debate. The truth of this affair needs to be established and the level of cover-up that has been perpetrated and by whom needs to be determined.

Limerick East): The Deputy should say that outside the House.

The Minister said it last night on the airwaves.

(Limerick East): It is easy to lie in here.

The Minister's side was very good at it the other day.

Thank you, Deputy Geoghegan-Quinn. Having considered the matter fully, it is not considered to be one contemplated by the Standing Order. Leave cannot be granted, therefore, to move the motion.
