Vol. 469 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Grant Aid.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

149 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education the reason the extension which a school (details supplied) in County Donegal applied for has not gone to tender in view of the fact that it was told that it would be going to tender in February to May 1996; and if she will make a statement on the current situation in relation to the school concerned. [17697/96]

A building project at the school mentioned by the Deputy, was included on the 1995 capital programme. The decision to include the school in the programme must be seen as the beginning of a process involving the preparation of sketch design drawings, planning permission and fire certification, contract documentation, tender and contract.

Contract documentation in respect of this project is currently being prepared. A decision on the timing of this process can only be taken after the contract documentation is complete and in the light of available financial resources. My Department has no record of having given an undertaking on the timing of the tender process.

Mary Harney

Question:

150 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to give a grant towards computer equipment at a school (details supplied) in Dublin 22 which has been selected to introduce the new leaving certificate applied programme which began on 1 September 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17704/96]

An annual resource grant for equipment and materials is provided in respect of schools approved to provide the leaving certificate applied. The grant is calculated on the basis of £125 per leaving certificate applied pupil.

A review of the financial support for schools providing the leaving certificate applied is currently taking place and will be completed shortly.
