Vol. 469 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Feasibility Study.

Liam Aylward

Question:

151 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, being made on the provision of a new community school at Ferrybank, Waterford, which involves the amalgamation of Slieverue vocational school in County Kilkenny and the neighbouring Sacred Heart of Mary secondary school, Waterford; and if her attention has been drawn to the urgency of the matter in view of the fact that the Slieverue school is in a very bad state of repair. [17714/96]

The post-primary building unit of my Department is currently making arrangements to appoint a consultant architect to carry out a feasibility study of the Sacred Heart secondary school site. As soon as the report from the consultant has been completed, the building unit will be in contact with the school authorities.

My Department is aware of the urgent need for the new community school and every effort will be made to ensure that there is no delay in providing the new premises.

In the meantime, an application for the replacement of prefabricated accommodation at Slieverue vocational school is under consideration and a decision on the matter will be issued to the vocational education committee shortly.
