Vol. 469 No. 5

Written Answers. - Deployment of Garda.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

194 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice if consideration will be given to increasing the presence of Garda foot patrols on the main streets in Dublin. [17860/96]

The deployment of An Garda Síochána is the responsibility of the Garda authorities. I have been informed by them that the deployment of Garda personnel in the Dublin Metropolitan Area is under constant review by Garda management.

An extensive review of the deployment of personnel in the DMA was recently undertaken with a view to making a greater number of Garda personnel available for operational "on street" duties. I am also informed that the allocation of personnel to these duties will be determined by a Garda assessment of where the priority demand for a greater Garda presence exists.
