Vol. 469 No. 5

Written Answers. - Medical Personnel.

Mary Harney

Question:

96 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Health if he will establish an appropriate body to examine the legal aspects of providing trained medical personnel at public venues where large crowds attend, as recommended by the jury at the Coroners' Court following a recent case (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17672/96]

Limerick East): The code of practice, issued by the Department of Education, clearly outlines the detailed requirements in relation to the provision of medical facilities, first aid and ambulances at major events and I would expect that promoters and venue owners would have regard to these guidelines.

As I indicated to the Deputy on 25 July 1996 in response to a previous question on this case, investigations were being carried out at that time into a similar tragic incident and I have been informed that an inquest into this case is due to take place to-day. Should the result of these investigations show any deficiency in the present arrangements, the Government will move quickly to remedy the situation.
