Question:

124 Miss Quill asked the Minister for the Environment the total tonnage of waste paper, waste glass and waste cans which is produced in Ireland every year; and the percentage of each which is recycled. [17706/96]

The most recent and comprehensive information on waste quantities is contained in the National Waste Database Report 1995 published by the Environmental Protection Agency; a copy of the report is available in the Oireachtas Library.

The Environmental Protection Agency report indicates that, in relation to the combined household and commercial waste streams in 1995, the quantities of waste arising including 509,373 tonnes of waste paper (16.5 per cent recovered); 97,638 tonnes of waste glass (29.2 per cent recovered); and 39,136 tonnes of waste metals (3.3 per cent recovered) of which ferrous metal packaging comprised 22,401 tonnes (1.6 per cent recovered) and aluminimum packaging comprised 7,509 tonnes (12.5 per cent recovered).
