Vol. 469 No. 7

Written Answers. - All-Ireland Research Council.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

38 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education the consideration, if any, that has been given to the concept of an all-Ireland research council to administer funds from both Irish and United Kingdom lotteries. [13666/96]

The importance of research in higher education is acknowledged and the policy approach is set out in the White Paper on Education, Charting Our Education Future. The White Paper also sets out a framework for North-South co-operation in education. This policy framework sets the context for development in these two areas.

Third level research in Ireland is not funded from the national lottery or via a research council. The allocation of lottery funding is a matter for determination by Government in the context of the annual Estimates.
