Vol. 469 No. 7

Written Answers. - Third Level Applications System.

Tony Killeen

Question:

116 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to initiate an all-Ireland applications system for entry to third-level institutions. [16549/96]

All third level institutions are academically autonomous and set their own entry requirements for those applying for admission to courses. The Central Applications Office is a private company limited by guarantee — non-profit making — which processes such applications centrally on behalf of participating institutions. The UCAS system in the United Kingdom is similar in many respects to the CAO.

My Department does not have any function in the affairs of the CAO or the scope of its operations. The question of changes in the applications system is under the control of the institutions themselves.
