Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Adult Literacy Programme.

Willie O'Dea

Question:

208 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the adult literacy programme is suffering due to the lack of suitable premises, lack of full-time permanent tutors and a general lack of funding; the steps, if any, she proposes to take to bring about improvements in this scheme; and the proposals, if any, she has to improve the scheme in the Limerick area. [18293/96]

Adult education, including literacy and numeracy tuition, is provided mainly through the Vocational Education Committees.

In recent years I have provided substantial additional funding to the vocational education committees, including the committees for Limerick City and County, for the adult literacy and community education scheme which is my Department's main instrument for helping adults who have literacy problems.

I am committed to further expansion of this and related adult education programmes to meet demand as resources permit.
