Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Blind Pupil Education.

Michael Ring

Question:

209 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education the education options, if any, which are available for a blind child (details supplied) in County Mayo. [18345/96]

The child in question has been assessed as being mildly mentally handicapped and, until recently, had been attending her nearest suitable school, St. Anthony's special school in Castlebar. However, I understand that the child's mother has concerns about the suitability of this placement and has withdrawn her from the school.

I am concerned to ensure that this child receives a suitable education. I have requested a member of my Department's inspectorate to visit the family as a matter of urgency to discuss their concerns and possible options for the future.
