Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Decommissioning of Arms.

Mary Harney

Question:

75 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, being made in the Office of the Attorney General on the preparation of legislation for the possible verification of arms decommissioning by paramilitary groups at some future date. [16481/96]

The preparation of a Draft Decommissioning Bill which will enable effect to be given to the recommendation of the international body on the decommissioning of illegally held arms has been completed by my Department in close consultation with the Attorney General's Office. Consultations have also taken place with the Northern Ireland Office, which will have responsibility for the parallel legislation in Northern Ireland.

As the Taoiseach announced in the Dáil on 10 October, the Government intends to publish the legislation at an early date.
