Vol. 470 No. 1

Written Answers. - Referendum Campaign Funding.

Noel Ahern

Question:

87 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice if she will give details of funding arrangements for the bail referendum campaign. [17280/96]

The Deputy will be aware that the main effect of the judgment in the McKenna case is that the Government cannot use public funds to campaign for a particular outcome in a referendum to amend the Constitution. In the circumstances, the question of the use of public funds to campaign for a particular outcome in a referendum to amend the Constitution does not arise. As is normal practice, it is intended that the wording of the proposed amendment will be included on polling cards. The question of what further arrangements, if any, might need to be put in place in terms of the provision of information to the electorate is being considered.
