110 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí who have applied for career breaks since January 1994; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18419/96]

The deployment of Garda personnel is the responsibility of the Garda authorities.

The have informed me that the number of career breaks applied for since January 1994 in the Garda Síochána is 34.

Career breaks in the Garda Síochána are governed by an 1989 directive from the Department of Finance and are confined to domestic, child minding and education purposes.
