Vol. 470 No. 3

Written Answers. - Privately Owned Tourism Facilities.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

53 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the amount of European Regional Development Fund money committed to the development of privately owned tourism facilities under the Operational Programme for Tourism; the funds committed by the private sector to match this community assistance; the proportion of funding allocated specifically to projects designed to alleviate seasonality difficulties; if he has satisfied himself with the extent of private investment in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18798/96]

The development of certain categories of privately owned tourism facilities is eligible for assistance under Sub-Programme 2, Product Development, of the Operational Programme for Tourism, 1994-1999. Up to the end of June 1996, it is estimated that a total investment of some £103 million has been committed to the development of such facilities. Of this amount, the EU will contribute £27 million in European Regional Development Fund grants and the private sector will generate the balance of £76 million.

One of the main aims of the operational programme is to extend the tourism season in order to concentrate, where possible, growth outside the peak tourism period and this aim is reflected in the category of facilities prioritised for assistance under sub-Programme 2. Consequently private investment under the operational programme is being steered towards putting highquality tourism facilities in place which will attract international visitors throughout the year.
