Vol. 470 No. 3

Written Answers. - Thatching Grants.

Austin Deasy

Question:

59 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if he will devise a thatching grant scheme for the owners of thatched public houses, restaurants and other commercial enterprises to allow them to retain these structures in the interests of tourism. [18762/96]

The Operational Programme for Tourism 1994-1999 is the primary vehicle at present for grant aiding tourism projects. The programme was agreed with the EU Commission in 1994 following an extensive consultation process during which demand for resources created the need to prioritise those areas most in need of financial assistance, in terms of achieving programme targets. Full details on targets, eligibility, grant criteria, aid rates, etc. are set out in the programme and do not include provision for a grant scheme such as that outlined in the Deputy's question.

However, the Deputy will be aware that my colleague, the Minister for the Environment, is already contributing to the presentation of the aspect of Ireland's heritage through the provision of grants for the renewal or repair of thatched roofs of houses. While thatched public houses, restaurants or other commercial premises are not eligible for these grants, the private residential portion of a premises such as a public house is eligible. The Heritage Council also operates a scheme for grant aiding vernacular buildings which includes thatched premises.
