Vol. 470 No. 3

Written Answers. - Seaside Town Designation.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

71 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance if he will designate Crosshaven in County Cork as a seaside town in the 1997 budget. [17715/96]

The renewal scheme for traditional seaside resorts commenced on 1 July 1995 for a three year period. This new initiative is a pilot scheme and is thus of an experimental nature. It must, therefore, be applied on a limited basis in order to evaluate its efficacy.

The selection of the 15 towns was made in order to give an even spread around the coast of designated resort areas. Until the scheme is firmly established and the experience from this pilot scheme can be assessed it would be inappropriate to consider including any additional resorts. However, those areas seeking inclusion in the scheme have been noted and will be borne in mind in the context of any future review of the scheme.
