95 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for the Environment the precise instructions he has issued to all local authorities in respect of the provision of accommodation for the travelling community in view of the recommendation DR1 of the task force report on the travelling community, which recommends the provision of 3,100 units of additional traveller accommodation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18880/96]

Chris Flood

Question:

96 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for the Environment whether each local authority has established a traveller tenant accommodation committee; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18881/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 95 and 96 together.

Local authorities have been advised of the need to accelerate their existing programmes to ensure progress towards meeting the accommodation targets as set down in the National Strategy for Traveller Accommodation, details of which were announced in the Dáil on 27 March 1996. The national strategy also provides for the setting up of local traveller accommodation committees. In advance of legislation which is being prepared as a matter of urgency, I intend advising local authorities in the near future in greater detail on implementation of the various aspects of the strategy, including the preparation of five year accommodation programmes and the establishment of traveller accommodation committees.
