Vol. 470 No. 4

Written Answers. - Farming Units.

Bertie Ahern

Question:

298 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of farming units in the country; whether they are classified by size; if so, the number in each category; and the average income in each category. [19328/96]

In its survey of agricultural labour input for 1994 the Central Statistics Office estimated that there were 153,400 farms in Ireland, and published data relating to the classification of these farms according to farm size. There is no corresponding data relating to farm income available from the CSO, but family farm incomes, on a farm-size basis, are available from Teagasc's National Farm Survey. Figures relating to such income are available for 1995 and these, together with the various farm size categories, are set out in the table beneath.
