Vol. 470 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Limerick Schools.

Michael Finucane

Question:

109 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Education the current status of the rationalisation of two primary schools (details supplied) in County Limerick; the status regarding funding for the proposed extension to the schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20177/96]

The two primary schools referred to by the Deputy agreed to amalgamate when an extension is provided to the existing boys' school. This extension is included in my Department's 1995 capital programme.

The current position on the project is that my Department is now considering applications from contractors and sub-contractors who applied to be considered for inclusion on the Department's tender list. When this stage is completed, a decision will be made on the timing of the tender and contract process in the context of the financial resources available.

Question:

110 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Education the current status of a proposed extension to a secondary school (details supplied) in County Limerick; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20178/96]

The postprimary school referred to by the Deputy applied to my Department for grant-aid towards the provision of temporary school accommodation.

There are two small postprimary schools in the centre in question with a combined enrolment of less than 400. My Department considers that this is an ideal centre for a single school development, which would maximise educational opportunity for the pupils of the area. Accordingly, at the end of last August, letters issued from my Department to the management of the two schools asking that the question of a single school development be considered. Their response is awaited.

The question of the provision of additional accommodation at the school referred to by the Deputy will be reconsidered in the light of the response regarding a single school development.
