Vol. 470 No. 8

Written Answers. - Drug-Related Deaths.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

79 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health the number of drug-related deaths which have occurred in Dublin, by postal district, in each of the past five years. [20168/96]

Limerick East): There are no accurate data on the total number of deaths from drug misuse. Central Statistics Office figures for drug-related deaths provide details on the number of deaths which were drug-related deaths, but they do not always differentiate between legal and illegal drugs. In addition, in some cases, death certificates issued by the medical practitioners may list the clinical cause of death, rather than the circumstances which led to the death, which will not then be recorded in the drug-related deaths category.

The Central Statistics Office provided the following statistics on drug-related deaths for the Dublin area for the previous five years. The information is not available by postal district but is broken down into four area codes which relate to persons resident in those four areas.
