Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

82 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Health whether elective orthopaedic services are available on a continuous basis in Letterkenny General Hospital, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20174/96]

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 81 and 82 together.

The appointment of a second consultant orthopaedic surgeon to Letterkenny General Hospital is the North Western Health Board's top consultant appointment priority. This post was approved by my Department and Comhairle na nOspideal earlier this year. The Local Appointments Commission advertised this post in September 1996 with a closing date for applications of 24 October 1996. It is hoped that the board will have a recommendation for appointment to this post from the Local Appointments Commission early next year.

Elective orthopaedic services are available on a continuous basis in Letterkenny General Hospital. The orthopaedic trauma service is at present provided on a week-on/week-off basis with Sligo General Hospital. However, the appointment of a second consultant orthopaedic surgeon is part of the ongoing development of a comprehensive orthopaedic service in the board's catchment area and will result in the provision of a comprehensive orthopaedic service at Letterkenny General Hospital.
