Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Cycle Lanes.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

131 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for the Environment the regulations under which cycle lanes are provided; whether the regulations oblige cyclists to use such lanes where provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20991/96]

Regulations made under section 60 of the Road Traffic Act, 1988 empower road authorities to provide cycle tracks as part of public roads, including footways. Cyclists must use a cycle track where one is provided.

Section 68 of the Roads Act, 1993 empowers road authorities to construct or provide cycleways for the exclusive use of pedal cyclists, or pedestrians and pedal cyclists.
