Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment the number of houses purchased by tenants under the national sales scheme for each of the past few years; the way in which these figures compare with purchases by tenants under the 1988 scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Information on the number of local authority houses purchased by tenants is published in the annual housing statistics bulletins, which are available in the Oireachtas Library. I am satisfied that the present scheme which, compared to the 1993 scheme, provides for increased discounts and gives tenants the option of purchasing their houses under shared ownership arrangements, is generally working satisfactorily.
