Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Road Funding.

Robert Molloy

Question:

154 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment if he will allocate special funding to Galway Corporation to enable it to proceed with the construction and completion of the Knocknacarra Distributor Road; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21164/96]

Three applications were recently received from Galway Corporation for funding in 1997 under the EU cofinanced scheme of grants for specific improvement projects on non-national roads, at a cost of £1,376,247. Two of the proposals related to the Knocknacarra Distributor Road. However, as the applications exceeded the appropriate expenditure guideline limit set out by my Department, the proposals have been returned to the corporation for revision and resubmission.

Local authorities have been advised by my Department that it is accepted that circumstances can arise where a single large high priority project can exceed the expenditure guidelines, in such circumstances, only that project should be submitted for consideration. It is open to Galway Corporation to consider whether to apply for funding for the Knocknacarra distributor road on this basis in 1997.
