Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - National School Catchment Areas.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

193 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, which will be taken in the near future to review catchment areas for national schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21021/96]

The position, generally, is that national schools do not have catchment areas as such for educational planning purposes. The majority of national schools are denominational and parish based. While enrolment policy is a matter for the boards of management of schools, it is expected that each school will, in the first instance, care for the demand from pupils within its immediate vicinity. There are no plans in my Department at present to review the matter.
