Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Special Examination Arrangements.

Micheál Martin

Question:

213 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education if she will have arrangements made to ensure that a person (details supplied) in County Cork who has learning difficulties and who is sitting the junior certificate examination in 1997, will be allocated an examiner to correct his paper who will understand his condition and will correct accordingly, and that any other arrangements needed will also be provided. [21157/96]

I can confirm that an application for special arrangements on the grounds of a specific learning difficulty has been made on behalf of this candidate by his school in connection with the 1997 junior certificate examination. The position is that the application has been considered by the psychological service of my Department. The psychologists have completed their consideration of the application and arrangements are now being made to notify the school of the decision. I would like to add that, with effect from 1995, schools dissatisfied with decisions on special examination arrangements have the right of appeal to an independent appeals committee.
