Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Chris Flood

Question:

214 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that there has been a serious cut-back in the pupil-teacher ratio in a school (details supplied) in Dublin 6W; if so, the action, if any, she proposes to take to reverse this; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21159/96]

The school referred to by the Deputy is under the control of County Dublin Vocational Education Committee. The allocation of teaching staff to the school is a matter in the first instance for the chief executive officer of the vocational education committee.

I understand, however, that the teacher allocation for this school in the 1995-96 school year was 53.7 whole-time teacher equivalents for an enrolment of 922 pupils. The staffing for the 1996-97 school year is 53.0 wholetime teacher equivalents for an enrolment of 902 pupils. There is, therefore, no disimprovement in the pupil teacher ratio in this particular school this year.
