Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Garda Deployment.

Seán Haughey

Question:

220 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí, including community gardaí, assigned to the Clontarf District H Division in Dublin 3; the plans, if any, she has to increase the number of gardaí in this division; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20858/96]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda resources and personnel to different areas. They have expressed concern, and I share that concern, about supplying the kind of detailed information relating to Garda personnel sought by the Deputy, on the grounds of security and in the interests of crime prevention generally.

Clontarf Garda Station is in the "J" District of the Dublin Metropolitan Area, with the District Headquarters at Raheny Garda station. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the current Garda personnel (all ranks) of Raheny District is 155. Within the district there is one Sergeant and 14 gardaí assigned to community policing duties and of these one Sergeant and four gardaí are assigned to community policing specifically in the Clontarf sub-District.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Assistant Commissioner for the Dublin Metropolitan Area is satisfied that the present level of personnel is adequate in meeting the current policing needs. I am assured by them that the present policing arrangements are kept under continual review and any changes necessary are made.
