Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Bray (Wicklow) Garda Station.

Mildred Fox

Question:

221 Ms M. Fox asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the fact that there are only two holding cells in Bray Garda station, County Wicklow; her views on whether this is adequate for a town the size of Bray; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20878/96]

Question:

222 Ms M. Fox asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the fact that there are no bars on the windows of interview rooms in Bray Garda station, County Wicklow, to prevent those in custody from jumping out if they so wish; the plans, if any, she has to rectify this; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20880/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 221 and 222 together. The Deputy is aware that it is planned to refurbish and extend Bray Garda station when finance becomes available. The need for additional cells will be considered in this context.

I understand that the room normally used for interviewing suspects in Bray Garda station is also used for other purposes and it would not be appropriate therefore to fit bars to the window, as this could constitute a hazard in the event of fire. The question of providing a dedicated interview room will, of course, be considered in the context of the proposed extension and refurbishment.
