Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Public Information Campaign.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

47 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the agreement entered into recently by the Government and the European Commission in relation to the public information campaign on economic and monetary union; and the efforts, if any, which will be made to ensure that any publicly funded campaigns are of a balanced nature, given the arguments for and against a single currency. [20813/96]

The Deputy will recall that the Treaty on European Union, which contains the provisions for economic and monetary union (EMU) including a single currency, was endorsed by the people in a referendum in 1992. A programme of public information consistent with that decision is being planned and Commission support will be sought for it. Given the decision of the people in 1992, it will consist, not of arguments for and against a single currency but of information to help business and the general public prepare for implementation of the Treaty provisions on economic and monetary union, including the single currency.
