Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - RTE Medium Wave Radio Signal.

Robert Molloy

Question:

114 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if it is Government policy to increase the RTÉ radio signal on the medium wave band, in order to provide clear broadcasts on a daily basis throughout the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21149/96]

As I indicated in reply to a similar question on 26 May 1996, columns 111 and 112 of the Official Report for that day refer, while I welcome initiatives already taken by RTE and other stations to disseminate their services to Irish people and others interested in Ireland living abroad, it is a matter for RTE and other broadcasting stations to decide if and by what means they wish to broadcast their services to Europe and other continents.

I have been informed by RTE that there are no practical technical means of providing good quality coverage throughout the United Kingdom on medium wave.

For the Deputy's information, RTE reports that it uses a number of satellites to deliver radio services to Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia.
