Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Appointment of Director of Traffic.

Eoin Ryan

Question:

118 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment when the traffic supremo will be appointed to deal with the traffic chaos in Dublin; and when he intends to introduce wheel clamps as reported in the national press on 5 November 1996. [20805/96]

In the light of the decision to establish the office of director of traffic, a special consultancy study was commissioned to define the organisational structures required to ensure that the director could fully and effectively discharge his/her functions and that the new post and unit within Dublin Corporation would have optimum operational capacity, functional independence, and self-financing capability. I expect that the study will be completed within the next week or so and urgent action will then be taken to appoint a director.

I will make the necessary regulations, in consultation with the Minister for Justice and the director, to facilitate the introduction of wheelclamping by the Director as soon as possible after his or her appointment.
