Vol. 471 No. 4

Written Answers - Roads Funding.

Eoin Ryan

Question:

119 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will allocate the necessary funds to resurface Strand Road/Beach Road, Sandymount, Dublin 4, as a matter of urgency. [20808/96]

Non-national road grants have been fully allocated this year and there are no moneys available to me from which an additional grant could be made to any local authority.

I understand that the works required at this location would involve reconstruction rather than resurfacing of these roads and would cost in the region of £1.2 million. In the normal course, responsibility for improvement and maintenance of non-national roads, such as those in question, is a matter for Dublin Corporation, financed from its own resources, supplemented by the annual discretionary grant provided by my Department. This grant will amount to £3 million in 1996.

Last September, my Department invited local authorities to submit applications for consideration for funding in 1997 under the EU co-financed grants scheme for specific improvement projects on non-national roads which are of economic benefit and help generate employment. It is a matter for Dublin Corporation to consider whether to submit an application for the roads in question, taking into account the EU eligibility criteria governing the scheme.
