Vol. 471 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Water Supply.

Ivor Callely

Question:

123 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if there are adequate water supplies to meet the growing demands in the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21214/96]

The position regarding the demand for, and the supply of, water to the Dublin region was set out in the report published earlier this year entitled the Greater Dublin Water Supply Strategic study, a copy of which is available in the Oireachtas Library. This report identified the various measures required to ensure that Dublin has an adequate water supply to meet its growing demands and sets out an investment programme involving a range of measures, including source augmentation works, the provision of trunk delivery mains, refurbishment of the distribution system and water conservation.

Since publication of the report, a number of important projects have been approved, including a major water conservation project costing over £30 million; the Ballyboden to Stillorgan pipeline; and the Howth reservoir. Further works are at an advanced stage of planning. This substantial investment programme is designed to ensure that the water supply needs for Dublin into the next century are fully met.
