Vol. 471 No. 5

Written Answers. - Low Cost Accommodation.

Michael McDowell

Question:

32 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for the Environment his views regarding the continued availability of low cost accommodation, particularly for the benefit of students and rent supplement tenants. [21128/96]

I recognise the importance of a good supply of quality accommodation at the lowest possible cost to meet all categories of housing need, either through the social housing programmes or by way of the private rented sector. The social housing programmes have been expanded significantly in recent years and, since 1981, the various tax incentives for the provision of private sector accommodation have had a beneficial effect in increasing the supply of good quality accommodation at reasonable cost.
