Vol. 471 No. 5

Written Answers. - Litter Survey.

David Andrews

Question:

47 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to a survey (details supplied) setting out tourist views on litter; the action, if any, he intends to take in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18939/96]

The initiative by the Irish Business Against Litter Group in commissioning a further attitude survey on litter is a welcome one. The survey complements both an earlier IBAL attitude survey and a detailed assessment published by my Department on the composition and incidence of litter.

The Department now possesses detailed information on the nature and extent of litter pollution and of its negative effects on Ireland's outdoor environment. This clearer evidence reinforces the determination to maintain and build on the Action Against Litter initiative which was mobilised earlier this year. This will include the publication shortly of proposed legislation to replace the Litter Act, 1982 to enhance local authority powers in relation to the prevention and control of litter, including stronger enforcement powers against offenders.
