Vol. 471 No. 5

Written Answers. - Galway Sewerage Schemes.

Robert Molloy

Question:

62 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment the current position regarding Knocknacarra, Barna, Mutton Island and Oranmore sewerage schemes, County Galway; and the reason for the delays in each case. [21118/96]

Construction work is nearing completion on the Knocknacarra Eastern collection system. The preliminary report for the Knocknacarra interceptor sewer was approved in June 1995. My Department is currently awaiting the submission of contract documents for this scheme. There is no current proposal with my Department in relation to Barna sewerage scheme.

As previously outlined to the House, in view of the difficulties associated with Galway Corporation's proposals for a causeway and treatment plant at Mutton Island, the Minister asked the corporation to consider the option of an underground treatment plant based on alternative technology. A definitive response is awaited. A tender recommendation for the Oranmore sewerage scheme has been submitted to my Department. Approval of this tender is dependent on agreement being reached on an approach to the provision of treatment facilities in Galway.
