Brendan Smith

Question:

128 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for the Environment if he will provide additional funding in 1996 to the North Eastern Health Board under the housing aid for the elderly scheme in view of the large number of applications awaiting approval and the urgent need to carry out basic home improvement works for elderly people; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21219/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 65 and 128 together.

Notification of second round allocation totalling £1 million recently issued to the health boards who, under the aegis of my Department, administer the scheme of special housing aid for the elderly. As a result, a total of £4 million has been allocated for the scheme in 1996, compared to £3 million in 1995. There are no further funds available for the scheme this year.
