Vol. 471 No. 5

Written Answers. - PIANO Report.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

106 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he intends to accept recommendations that the National Symphony Orchestra be removed from RTÉ management and control; and the alternative management structures he would favour to give effect to the recommendations. [21333/96]

As the Deputy will be aware the PIANO report presented to me earlier this year raised issues relating to the National Symphony Orchestra that are proper to be considered by RTE in the first instance. I am considering the response of RTE to the report and I recently met representatives of the National Symphony Orchestra to discuss their reactions to the recommendations therein affecting the orchestra. If I decide that a legislative provision along the lines recommended in the PIANO report is desirable I will address this issue in the context of the new broadcasting legislative proposals currently being finalised by me.

Question:

107 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the current position in relation to the status of the PIANO report which has been with him since the beginning of 1996; his views on the fact that there is a fairly widespread feeling in the music industry that the main recommendations in PIANO will not be acted upon; if he will allay these fears by outlining the way in which he intends to incorporate the PIANO report into his future plans and legislation for the music industry. [21334/96]

As the Deputy will be aware the PIANO report presented to me earlier this year raised issues that are proper to be considered by RTE, An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the Minister for Education in the first instance. I am still in the process of consultation with these parties and I am not yet in a position to indicate which, or in what manner, the recommendations contained in the PIANO report will be implemented.
