Vol. 471 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Safety Promotion.

Ivor Callely

Question:

118 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to launch a public awareness promotion of road safety in the coming weeks; the measures, if any, which may be implemented over the Christmas period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21208/96]

Public awareness campaigns for the promotion of road safety are a matter for the National Safety Council, at national level. They arrange campaigns throughout the year to promote awareness of the risks of drink-driving, not wearing seat belts, excessive speed and general carlessness by road users. I will be launching the council's special Christmas road safety campaign later this month, focusing on the anti-drink driving message "Never ever drink and drive. It's always too late to say sorry".
