Vol. 471 No. 6

Written Answers. - Free Fees Initiative.

Noel Ahern

Question:

46 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the number in each university or third level institution who have been granted free education in 1996-97; the number who have been refused free education; if she will give an analysis of those refused, in view of complaints that the spirit of the Government decision is not being adhered to and every technicality is being sought to refuse applications. [21203/96]

The data requested by the Deputy are not available for the 1996-97 academic year. However, the numbers who were eligible under the free fees initiative in the 1995-96 academic year are set out by institution below. The figures do not include students on ESF funded national certificate and diploma programmes in the regional technical colleges and Dublin Institute of Technology. These students had their fees paid for them prior to the introduction of the free fees initiative.

My Department does not have data on students who were refused free fees.
It is incorrect to say that every technicality is being sought to reject applications. Eligibility is determined in the light of the criteria laid down.
